The legendary leg lamp from The Christmas Story – Inside Avenue Antiques Inc.

Ah yes, the “indescribably beautiful” leg lamp, the “statue” of art movement hilarity, but as tacky as it may seem this legendary leg lamp has made us laugh since its debut in “The Christmas Story” back in 1983.  If you actually step back and think about it, 30 years is essentially still recent history, okay, okay…now that I am the age that I am, I’m willing to grasp at anything that makes me feel young, but that’s another post.

“The snap of a few sparks, a quick whiff of ozone, and the lamp blazed forth in unparalleled glory.  Oh, look at that!  Will you look at that?  Isn’t that glorious?”  All right, so we may not be Mr. Parker; however, we do share his same enthusiasm when we come across our own acmes of discovery.  For many, our discoveries originate in antiques stores across the nation, if not antique stores, then flea markets, garage sales, and yes, even the Nebraska Junk Jaunt.

While Alberta is still fairly “new” in comparison to Europe, we certainly don’t lack in original and historic antiques.  Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting two local antique stores, the first one is called “Inside Avenue Antiques Inc.” and the second is “Uniquities Architectural Antiques”.  Both offer something for everyone with varying degrees of items and prices, plus both are located in the southeast quadrant of the city.

“Inside Avenue” is literally just that, a massive “avenue” of collectables and antiques, and yes, one can even find the legendary leg lamp in this store.  The items range from pre-nineteen hundreds to the more recent years and everything is organized into categories, which makes browsing a delightful and memorable experience for everyone.   Prices are clearly marked on the tag in addition to its historic background if known.  The owners and staff are helpful, knowledgeable, and offer assistance when needed.  After discovering an antique 1918 Kodak camera, I was off to my next destination.

Uniquites Architectural Antiques

After a short drive I pulled into “Uniquites”, located in an old large warehouse. I must admit, this was my first visit to this store and it did not disappoint.  Considering the size of the building, the atmosphere was cozy, inviting, and spectacular.   Honestly, I didn’t know where to start first, everything was impeccable.  Compared to the prior store, the prices were more expensive; however, the quantity and quality of the furniture was stellar.   My understanding is that the owners travel to Europe, mostly the U.K., through-out the year and salvage various items from hospitals, factories, farms, etc. and return them to Calgary for our enjoyment!  Like the other store, the prices and descriptions were clearly marked and depending on the item, reasonable negotiations are accepted.  Items can be placed on hold if further thought is required and once again, the knowledgeable owners are willing to assist.

After discovering numerous items, my antiquing day had come to an end.  However, there are still other antique stores in Calgary and the surrounding area, in addition to antique shows and auctions.  This is just the beginning for me…
