As the leading urban centre in this region, Calgary both benefited from and demonstrated the economic, political and social development of that area of the province. The civic booster movement was popular in many western North American towns and cities during the early years of the twentieth century and the construction of such a solid and imposing a building as City Hall served as a dramatic statement about the dynamic future of Calgary and Alberta. Built in order to keep pace with growing municipal services, the building originally housed the mayor and aldermen, city government offices, the police department, law courts and the municipal telephone system. However, by 1913, the building was already too small to house these civic services. City Hall also represents the continuous presence of local government since 1885. With the outbreak of the First World War, the beer company donated the use of the hotel to the Alberta Red Cross, which transformed it into Alberta's first military convalescent hospital. The province purchased the building in 1935, putting it to work as a hostel for the unemployed from the Depression right through the late '60s. One evening this past summer my son and I were walking the streets of Wismar, Germany, which is a small fishing village, located along the coast of the Baltic Sea. Periodically, a steeple would appear between the rooftops. I announced to my son that we must find the Cathedral that belonged to the grandiose steeple. Within a few minutes we arrived at our destination to noticed people sporadically coming and going from the front entrance. Curiosity got the best of us and we decided to enter. Firstly we were amazed at the interior, which no longer housed any pews, but instead opened up into an empty shell where the walls and columns were at least fifty plus feet tall and embraced by red brick. Secondly, we were pleasantly surprised to find artsy sculptures erratically spread around the interior, in addition to a wine table and host. Skipping the wine, we headed towards the sculptures and other displays which danced in the light.
